This blog has been created in remembrance of my father T. V. Kaliyaperumal, who founded “ Erimalai Pathippagam” in the late 1940s in Thuraiyur, Trichy district along with likeminded friends.
Eirmalai pathippagam published numerous literature, primarily the speeches and writings of the dravidian leaders and thinkers such as Thanthai Periyar, Aringar Anna, Dr. Kalaignar, Thiru. A.V.P Asaithambi, Thilli villalan, Thu.Vee. Narayanan and Nara Nachiyappan in the form of hand outs and books to bring about social and political awareness among public. In addition, it had published the books and novels of various prominent writers of this period such as Ilangeeran, Ira Dhanalan, A.K. Velan, Dr. Sundaram etc.
Erimalai pathippagam was one of the leading publishers during this period. Dr. Kalaignar Mu. Karunanidhi’s book of “ Bali Beedam Nokki” was published by us in 1947. Some of the books published by us such as Gandhiyar Sandiyadayaa, Azhiyattume Dravidam etc., were created sensation in the dravidan political circle in Tamil Nadu. Gandhiyar Sandhiadaya published by Erimalai Pathippagam in 1949 which was written by a prominent dravidian leader Thiru. A.V.P Asaithambi. This book had analyzed the reasons for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, which was banned by the then government of Tamil Nadu. Along with the writer Thiru. A.V.P Asaithambi, my father T.V. Kaliyaperumal and Thiru. Thangavel were arrested for publishing this book. Aringnar Anna had written about this incident in Dravidanadu magazine as an articles on 30//7/1950. Due to the legal supported arranged under the leadership of Arignar Anna and the DMK party, the arrested were released after a month of severe imprisonment.
After facing many challenges and struggles, Erimalai pathippagam stopped the publishing at the end 1960s. Unfortunately, we not have the copies of all the books, novels and articles published by us. Now, we are in the process of gathering and sharing it for the benefit of Tamil readers to understand the socio, literary and political context of Tamil Nadu during the above said period.
